Let’s try this again: 2022 is going to be the year!
Let’s face it—few in Southern California start thinking about New Year’s Eve plans until after Christmas.
Decision time is nigh.
We thought the pandemic had puttered out. Like a January 1 hangover, however, it’s still slowing us down and putting a damper on our celebratory spirit.
Collected below are a half dozen hot spots around downtown San Diego where you can gather and get a good vibe about the new year.
Be sure to check with the venue about specific precautions being taken to prevent the further spread of COVID.
The San Diego Sun reached out to several spots about protocols, and heard back from the Lafayette Hotel:
“Due to the new California mask mandate, we will be requiring all attendees to wear a facial covering,” according to Lafayette Hotel Swim Clubs & Bungalows catering sales manager Lisa Kanemori. “We will be serving beverages and hors d’oeuvres, so guests may remove them while actively eating/drinking. We also have two outdoor courtyards that will be open for guests if they wish to remove their masks.”
Big Night San Diego
Previous (pre-pandemic) iterations of Big Night San Diego at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront have attracted thousands of revelers. The hotel will have 10 party areas open (including eight dance floors) where attendees can roam back and forth. The party kicks off early for VIPs at 8 p.m.; 9 p.m. for general admission. Price: $105 to $190 per person. More information: bignightsandigo.com.
Lost in Paris
The New Year’s Eve party theme at The Lafayette Hotel is a nod to 1920s Paris. “Lost in Paris” guests are encouraged to dress up as the Lost Generation. (Hint: flapper dresses, lace and pearls for women, Zoot suits or military suit jackets for men.) Enjoy live bands, DJs, light appetizers and a midnight champagne toast. Overnight hotel packages are also available. Door open for the party at 9 p.m. Price: $100 per person. Room packages start at $239. More Information: lafayettehousesd.com.
The InterContiental San Diego is also looking to the 1920 for NYE party inspiration. The Gatsby’s House party will be a multi-room, all-VIP-style event. Bars will be stock with premium libations and local DJs will be spinning dance music all night. Group and ultra-VIP packages are available. Price: $159 to $2,500. More information: Gatsby’s House.
Dance It Out
The Spirit of San Diego is 143 feet long—with three levels, outdoor decks, lounges and two dance floors. This party yacht has a capacity of 500 and has sold out for 18 straight years for a New Year’s Eve cruise around San Diego Bay. Party sets sail at 9 p.m. More information: Yacht Party.
